Furniture Bargains from Winter Market, Wooden Furniture
By: Sally Socolich

The Wooden Duck in Berkeley shopped the market for samples and came away with a large shipment of furniture from two companies.

One of the firms, Wooden Man, makes solid-wood furniture from reclaimed Douglas fir from the interior beams of old buildings. Made with traditional woodworking techniques like mortise and tenon, tongue and groove, dowel pinning and hand-hammered hardware, each piece is destined for long-lasting, heavy-duty family use.

There's an emphasis on straight lines, classic styling, and simple shapes with design influences suggestive of Shaker simplicity, American Country, English Country and contemporary primitive.

The occasional and dining tables, armories, bookcases, beds, bedroom furniture, consoles, entertainment centers and accent pieces should appeal to anyone bored with rustic pine.

The various samples from this line come in several different finishes, including 10 painted finishes and seven wax finishes.

The line may seem pricey at retail to some, but the 25 percent savings -off full price should provide oppotunities for quality investments. For example, the trestle dining table (72 by 40 inches) in a chestnut finish is $1,125 instead of the original $1,500.

The 25 samples (all 25 percent off retail) from the Pangaea Collection are typical of the overall eclectic inventory of styles that coexist at Wooden Duck on a daily basis.

These pieces include wooden chests, assorted tables, cabinets, benches, chairs, tables and buffets imported from China that are either restored products or made from old wood.

Many have been Westernized, such as armories made to hold televisions.
