FAQ

Is it harder to use reclaimed wood?
Using reclaimed wood is far more labor intensive than working with new wood. Reclaimed wood needs to be de-nailed, planed on both sides and bisqued. As a result, our finished pieces are exceptionally stable and solid.

What are the advantages to using reclaimed wood?
In addition to saving trees, old wood is more stable than new wood, and doesn’t swell, split or warp like new wood does. Much of the salvaged wood we use is old growth, which is far superior to most woods currently available. Old growth wood is more dense, clear (meaning it has fewer knots), and has a much richer color than new growth. Further, it is impossible to achieve the patina of aged wood with anything but old wood.

Why is teak used so much for outdoor furniture?
Teak is an extremely dense hardwood prized for its natural properties. It doesn’t warp, stays cool in the sun, is impervious to rain, and repels insects, making it resistant to decay. With proper care, teak furniture can last for generations, and ages to a lustrous silvery-gray when left outdoors.

What makes Douglas Fir an appealing option for indoor furniture?
Douglas Fir is the most readily available reclaimed wood on the west coast, and is also the hardest of the “soft woods.” As a California-based company, we seek out wood mostly from local resources throughout California and the Pacific Northwest.

How do I care for my furniture?
Indoor: If your piece has a lacquer finish or French polish, we recommend using Howard Orange Oil (available in a spray bottle). Just spray or wipe off.
Outdoor: We sell our teak unfinished, so if you want it to turn silvery gray, let it age naturally. It will age naturally and may acquire subtle “surface cracks,” which do not affect the quality or durability of the wood. The furniture should be washed once a year with mild detergent and a scrub brush. If you’d like to seal the teak, we recommend the sealant Penofin (www.penofin.com) or Marine Teak Oil. To maintain the finish, you must reapply your sealant every six months. *Please note: Furniture cannot be returned once furniture is treated, even within the 30-day window.
